A natural gemstone, its use dates back 7,000 years. It is best known as an ornamental, opaque, blue stone, somewhere between azure and ultramarine.

Ultramarine pigment, in particular, was extracted from lapis lazuli. Once purified, it was once sold at the price of gold.
